Job Description

Prepare the operating room for the patient, setting up surgical instruments and

equipment making sure the field is sterile, provides assistance to the surgeon during the

surgical procedure and maintain patient safety, clearing away the used instruments

and linens following the operation, and preparing the patient for transport to recovery

Responsibilities

• Receives assignments and reviews the caseload for the day.
• Prepares the operating room, checks all the necessary equipment, set of instruments, sutures, and medications for all the surgeries are available and complete.
• Arranges supplies, linens, instruments, basins, solutions, and special equipment on instrument table and tray for maximum efficiency in handling and in anticipation of the surgeon’s needs as indicated by the type of procedure. Observes sterile technique and dispose of any instrument or materials when in doubt of sterility.
• Does preoperative count of sponges, needles, and instruments with circulating nurse.
• Performs surgical hand scrub washing routine and don proper surgical PPE.
• Participate in the “Time Out and Sign Out” process together with the surgical team.
• Performs efficient assistance to the surgeon during a surgical procedure by proper handling of instruments at all times, excellent retracting skill,
• Keeps instruments sterile and in proper position within easy reach of the surgeon throughout the surgical procedure.
• Maintains sterility and awareness of patient safety throughout the procedure.
• Keeps ends of sutures and ligatures from dragging across needles and sponges to be sure they are all accounted for when surgery is complete.
• Have specimen pans ready to receive specimens as needed. Handles the specimen taken to the circulating nurse.
• Verifies sponge and instrument count with circulating nurse before passing suture for closure of the incision.

Qualifications

• Bachelor of Science in Nursing Degree (BSN).
• Valid nursing license from the country of origin.
• Computer proficiency.
• Good verbal and written English communication skills.
