Reporting to the Nurse Manager, the Operating Theatre Nurse is responsible for assessing, planning, implementing, and evaluating nursing care for patients undergoing surgical procedures in accordance with evidence-based practice, regulatory requirements, and organizational standards. The role provides safe perioperative care across the pre-operative, intra-operative, and immediate post-operative phases, while collaborating with the multidisciplinary team to ensure optimal patient outcomes, patient safety, and quality of care.
Responsibilities
- Assess, plan, implement, and evaluate individualized nursing care for patients undergoing surgical procedures in accordance with evidence-based practice, organizational policies, and regulatory standards.
- Deliver safe and effective perioperative nursing care throughout the pre-operative, intra-operative, and immediate post-operative phases of the patient journey.
- Prepare and maintain the operating theatre environment, ensuring the availability, functionality, and safe use of surgical instruments, equipment, and supplies.
- Collaborate closely with surgeons, anesthesiologists, and multidisciplinary healthcare teams to support the delivery of high-quality surgical care and optimal patient outcomes.
- Monitor, document, and communicate patients’ clinical status, nursing interventions, and responses to treatment, escalating concerns in a timely manner when required.
- Ensure compliance with infection prevention and control practices, surgical safety protocols, quality standards, and applicable DOH/DHA regulations.
- Promote a culture of patient safety, quality improvement, and continuous professional development through participation in audits, education, and evidence-based practice initiatives.
- Act as a professional role model by supporting teamwork, mentoring junior staff and students, and contributing to a collaborative and patient-centered care environment.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing from an accredited institution and current unrestricted Registered Nurse licensure/registration in the country of practice.
- Minimum of two (2) years of post-qualification clinical nursing experience, including recent experience in an Operating Theatre/Perioperative Services setting supporting a range of surgical specialties.
- Eligibility for DOH/DHA nursing licensure and certification in Basic Life Support (BLS) is required; Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) or Perioperative Nursing certification is preferred.
- Demonstrated knowledge of perioperative nursing practices, infection prevention and control standards, surgical safety protocols, patient assessment, and multidisciplinary teamwork within an acute healthcare environment.
