Job Description
The Phlebotomist/donor collection technician is responsible for drawing blood from patients or donors and records identity of patient or donor.
Functional Responsibilities:
- Ensures through the actions, either directly or indirectly, that a superior quality of medical treatment, compassion and understanding is given to every patient served at the CARE Hospitals and Clinics.
- Collects blood from patient in the hospital, blood bank, or similar facility for analysis or other medical purposes.
- Assembles equipment, such as tourniquet, needles, disposable containers for needles, blood collection devices, gauze, cotton, and alcohol on work tray, according to requirements for specified tests or procedures.
- Verifies or records identity of patient or donor and converses with patient or donor to allay fear of procedure.
- Applies tourniquet to arm, locates accessible vein, swabs puncture area with antiseptic, and inserts needle into vein to draw blood into collection tube or bag.
- Withdraws needle, applies treatment to puncture site, and labels and stores blood container for subsequent processing.
- Transports specimens in a timely manner from the collection areas of patient’s rooms to the Clinical Laboratory.
- Handles mild side effects or adverse reactions from patients or donors in a calm and orderly fashion to prevent harm, while promptly informing the supervisor or HOD.
- Follow all safety and Infection Control policies and procedures, including standard precautions, when performing phlebotomy procedures, handling biological specimens and waste disposal.
- Assures that the work area is maintained in an orderly manner and is cleaned and disinfected regularly to avoid contamination.
- Demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to acceptably perform phlebotomy procedures across all age groups, including neonates.
Required
- Bachelor’s Degree/ ore equivalent from an approved school of medical Technology, or Nursing College or University.
- Current registration with the designated authority for Medical Technologist / Technician from country of origin / recruitment.
- Valid license of SCFHS & Ministry of Health (MOH) in Saudi Arabia.
- Current certification in Basic Life Support (BLS).
Minimum Work Experience:
Required
- Two (2) years’ experience similar to the post.
Skills & Competencies:
- Technical Proficiency
- Advanced Blood Collection: Expert proficiency in venipuncture and capillary collection across all age groups, including neonates and pediatric patients.
- Specimen Management & Transport: Specialized knowledge in safe handling, stabilization, processing, labeling, and timely transport of biological specimens.
- Adverse Reaction Response: Technical capability to immediately identify and clinically manage mild side effects of blood collection.
- Laboratory information systems (LIS) management
- Safety & Compliance
- Biosafety and infection control protocols
- Regulatory standards (JCIA, CBAHI, CAP, AABB and SFDA)
- Hazardous material handling
- Documentation and record-keeping
- Fluency in verbal and written English.
- Exhibits professionalism and excellent interpersonal communication skills.
- Working knowledge of computer skills.
