Major Duties and Responsibilities

  • Formulates a quality plan to evaluate, monitor and implement changes and re-evaluate changes to improve the quality and appropriateness of practice provided by the Department.
  • Participate as a member or Chairperson of any hospital committee as assigned.
  • Is a member of the Medical Executive Committee and participate in the development of the hospital’s overall objectives, planning and resource allocation.
  • Through the Medical Director, exercise such authority as is deemed necessary to supervise the professional care provided by all members of the staff assigned to the department.
  • Advice the Medical Director with respect to the quality of medical care, diagnosis and treatment provided to the in-patients and out-patients of the department.
  • Is responsible for the organization and implementation of clinical review and utilization resource within department.
  • Make recommendations to the Medical Director through the credential committee regarding appointment of new members to the department.
  • Reviews and updates departmental policies and procedures using CBAHI, JCIA, CAP standards every two years.
  • Advice members of the department regarding current hospital and department policies, objectives and rules.
  • Holds a monthly departmental meetings and documents minutes.
  • Submits a monthly report to the Medical Director.
  • Delegates appropriate responsibility within the department.
  • Organizes and approve leave and vacations for medical staff in his/ her department according to work needs.
  • Recommends to Administration the types and quantities of equipment necessary for the Department.
  • Approves changes in work schedules. Advises and approves overtime duty. Recommends compensation time for staff within the department according to work needs.
  • Plans and participates actively in the Continuing Medical Education (CME) program of the department.
  • Plans and participates actively in the training program within the department.
  • Is responsible for appraisal and annual evaluation of members of his/ her department according to hospital protocol.
  • Notifies the Medical Director of his/ her absence and recommend and alternate from the department.
  • Perform other applicable tasks and duties assigned within the realm of his/ her knowledge, skills and abilities.

  • Plan, schedule and direct the work of the department’s staff to meet the hospital objectives.
  • Recommend criteria for selecting the department’s or service’s professional staff and choose or recommend individuals who meet those criteria
  • Participate in the recruitment process in his/her department by updating the departmental staffing plan on an annual basis, reviewing credentials of job applicants and recommending hiring.
  • Provide orientation and training for all staff of the duties and responsibilities for the department or service to which they are assigned.
  • Establish, implement and maintain continuing professional development programs.
  • Assure that a regular and systematic monitoring and evaluation of the quality and appropriateness of services rendered within the service is carried out through designated quality assurance mechanisms.
  • Responsible to monitor and maintain staff performance, by developing annual performance evaluations to test the employees’ competencies and by suggesting training needs and career objectives for employees in the coming years.
  • Participate in creating the policies and procedures necessary to carry out the mission
  • Implement Policies and Procedures of the hospital as well as Rules and Regulations of all relevant government and health care authorities.
  • Recommend space, medical technology, equipment, staffing, and other resources needed by the department or service and have a process in place to respond to shortages.
  • Assist in preparation of any required budget reports.
  • Chair all departmental meetings or appoint a designee to chair meetings in his absence.
  • Ensures performance measurement and improvement of the outcomes of the department.
  • Responsible for the motivation and the inspiration of the department staff.
  • Trains and orients new personnel, conducts lectures and demonstrates new techniques. Assigns staff based on their previous experience to participate in -service programs.
  • Make sure all resources related to his department are sufficient to all hospital demands.
  • Ensures that all medical staff working under his supervision works within the privilege granted to them (Physicians) and the competencies (Technicians) specific to their field.
  • Provide and instruct his staff to give health teaching through methods appropriate to a patients’ development level, learning needs, readiness and ability to learn, language preference, culture and situation.

Patient and Family Rights & Education

  • Involves the patient/families in plan of care and respects patients/families regarding their goals and choices of patient care.
  • Provides health promotion and health teaching thru methods appropriate to a patients’ developmental level, learning needs, readiness and ability to learn, language preference, culture and situations.
  • Allots time necessary to assess, plan implement and evaluate patient education provided to patients/families with appropriate documentation.
  • Utilize the nursing process in creating and coordinating teaching plans for individualized patients.
  • Create patient care assignments as per competency regarding surgical procedures

Reporting to:

  • Medical Director

Supervise:

  • Laboratory Department, hospital committee chairpersons and members, all physicians and other healthcare professionals and relevant hospital staff including the Point of Care Testing in the Hospital.

Liaises with:

  • All Department Heads and other, Health Care Professionals.

Qualifications:

Minimum of:

  • Either American Board, or Canadian Fellowship, or MRC (path), Ph.D in Clinical Lab. Science or Equivalent.

Desirable:

  • Higher qualifications in his specialty.

Experience:

Minimum of:

  • Minimum ten (10) years experience post qualification.
  • Current valid license to practice medicine in the area of his specialty.
  • Three (3) years experience of the similar position.

Desirable:

  • Previous administrative experience.
  • Registration in Saudi Medical Council and/ or Current license to practice medicine in Saudi Arabia.

  • Exhibits professionalism and excellent interpersonal communication skills.
  • Is knowledgeable of the Medical by-laws.
  • Knowledge of computer application.
