The Specialist Surgeon will be taking part in delivery of care to the patient both as in-patients and Out-patient basis. They will be part of oncall rota that involves providing front line care by covering the Emergency department and the inpatient services. They will perform Fracture reductions other emergency procedures in ED when required. As oncall doctors they will also assist in Emergency theatres for orthopaedic cases.
As for the Outpatient services, they will be expected to run the fracture clinics under supervision of Attending surgeon. There will also be opportunities to see patients in regular elective clinics under supervision. They will be regular elective theatre sessions.
For the inpatient services, they will function within the Department of Surgery to assist in the care of the Orthopedic patients. Care is delivered as part of an interprofessional team. The Specialist is responsible for assessment of patients as well as carrying out the care plans. Care is on the wards as well as in the intensive care areas such as PICU, NICU, and ER. There is a variable requirement for the incumbent to work in other areas such as the operating room and clinic. The Specialist reports to the consultant Attending surgeon, who will have a supervisory role.

Work will involve shift work including overnight shifts in hospital. This is a full-time position with the work hours as dictated by Sidra policy.  Participation in scholarly and quality projects will be required. Teaching to Medical and interprofessionals will be required.

  • Functions independently to evaluates and treats patients with complex acute, critical and chronically ill patients, according to written guidelines as defined by the nurse practitioner’s professional scope of practice and in adherence with Sidra’s agreed upon scopes of practice 
  • Performs age appropriate histories on new patients
  • Performs pertinent physical exams with assessment of the normal and abnormal findings on new patients according to written guidelines as defined by the nurse practitioner’s professional scope of practice and in adherence with Sidra’s agreed upon scopes of practice
  • Obtains age appropriate interval histories on return patients
  • Performs pertinent examinations on return patients 
  • Performs or requests and evaluates diagnostic studies as indicated upon evaluation of the patient according to written guidelines as defined by the nurse practitioner’s professional scope of practice and in adherence with Sidra’s agreed upon scopes of practice
  • Prescribes appropriate pharmacological and non-pharmacological treatment modalities. Obtains counter-signature on prescription from the supervising physician for medications not included in the approved formulary
  • Performs designated procedures after demonstrating competency and according to written standardized procedure where applicable
  • Facilitates the patient’s transition within and between health care settings: admissions, transfers and discharges and completes appropriate paperwork
  • Works across all service lines by collaborating with multidisciplinary team members and making appropriate referrals
  • Applies critical thinking to make independent determinations on process and policy exceptions that need to be defined on a case by case judgment
  • In consultation with the collaborating physician, enrolls patients in investigational studies approved by the Investigational Review Board (IRB), and orders necessary tests and medications. 
  • Assists the physician in the operating room in accordance with operating room protocols
  • Evaluates the effectiveness of interventions. When needed initiates a change to the plan of care, treatment. Collaborates with the physicians when necessary to obtain the desired patient outcome.
  • Recognizes and considers the age-specific needs of the patient
  • Utilizes effective communication and interactions with patients, family, staff and members of the community from diverse backgrounds. Acts as advisor and facilitates staff, patient and family decision making by providing educational tools
  • Provides counseling/anticipatory guidance to patient, family and/or staff regarding physical, psychological or developmental needs
  • Recognizes situations which require the immediate attention of a physician and initiates life-saving procedures when necessary
  • Provides expert education, consultation, advocacy research, leadership and mentorship. 
  • Promotes the advancement of the advanced practice nursing profession at Sidra and the community-at-large. This may include publication, participation in professional organizations and providing educational support to the nursing staff.
  • Participates in research design, implementation and interpretation.
  • Provides timely, accurate and considered strategic advice on clinical problems and recommends corrective actions to be taken

Qualifications

Education

  • MD
  • Successful completion of a Post-Graduate residency in Orthopaedics
  • Pediatric Orthopedic fellowship is preferred

Experience

  • Minimum completion of Orthopaedic Residency only
