Moorfields Eye Hospital Abu Dhabi is seeking a highly skilled and patient-focused Specialist Anaesthetist to join its team on a part-time basis. The successful candidate will provide high-quality anaesthetic services for a wide range of ophthalmic procedures, ensuring the safe and effective management of patients throughout the perioperative journey. Working closely with ophthalmologists, nursing teams, and allied healthcare professionals, the Specialist Anaesthetist will contribute to delivering exceptional patient outcomes while maintaining the highest standards of clinical excellence and patient safety.

Responsibilities

  • Provide anaesthetic care for a broad range of ophthalmic procedures, including cataract, corneal, oculoplastic, pediatric, glaucoma, and vitreoretinal surgeries.
  • Conduct comprehensive preoperative assessments, including risk stratification, optimization of comorbidities, and patient counselling.
  • Administer general, regional, monitored sedation, and local anaesthetic techniques as appropriate for ophthalmic procedures.
  • Deliver safe perioperative and postoperative care, ensuring effective pain management and recovery monitoring.
  • Support emergency anaesthetic requirements related to ophthalmic surgical services when required.
  • Collaborate with ophthalmologists, nursing staff, and multidisciplinary teams to ensure efficient operating theatre workflow and patient-centered care.
  • Maintain compliance with clinical governance standards, infection prevention protocols, and patient safety initiatives.
  • Participate in clinical audits, quality improvement projects, and departmental service development activities.
  • Contribute to the development and implementation of clinical pathways, sedation protocols, and best practice guidelines.
  • Support the training and education of nursing staff, technicians, and junior healthcare professionals in anaesthetic safety and perioperative care.
  • Maintain accurate and timely clinical documentation in accordance with hospital and regulatory requirements.
  • Engage in continuous professional development to remain current with advancements in anaesthesia and ophthalmic surgical care.

Qualifications

  • MBBS, MBChB, MD, or equivalent medical degree from a recognized institution.
  • Completion of a recognized residency or specialty training program in Anaesthesiology.
  • Eligibility for Department of Health (DOH) Abu Dhabi licensure as a Specialist Anaesthetist.
  • Minimum of 3 years’ post-specialization experience in Anaesthesia.
  • Previous experience supporting ophthalmic surgery, ambulatory surgery, or day-care procedures is highly preferred.
  • Competency in sedation techniques, airway management, and regional anaesthesia.
  • Experience in pediatric anaesthesia is desirable.
  • Strong clinical judgment and the ability to make sound decisions in a fast-paced environment.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and teamwork skills.
