We are seeking an experienced and highly skilled Senior Optometrist with a strong background in specialty contact lens practice to join our ophthalmic team. The postholder will provide advanced optometric care with particular expertise in complex contact lens fitting, anterior segment assessment, and collaborative management of corneal and ocular surface disorders.The ideal candidate will be clinically strong, patient focused, and confident in managing routine and complex optometric cases, including keratoconus, irregular corneas, post-corneal transplant patients, post-refractive surgery patients, and other cases requiring specialty contact lens solutions. The Senior Optometrist will work closely with consultant ophthalmologists, orthoptists, nurses, and wider multidisciplinary teams to deliver safe, high-quality, evidence-based care.This role also includes responsibility for supporting service development, maintaining high clinical standards, mentoring junior staff where required, and contributing to patient education and overall patient experience.

Responsibilities

  • Provide comprehensive optometric assessment and management for adult and paediatric patients within a tertiary eye care setting.
  • Perform detailed refraction, binocular vision assessment, contact lens assessment, and anterior segment examination.
  • Independently assess, fit, prescribe, and manage a wide range of specialty contact lenses, including scleral, RGP, hybrid, custom soft, and post-surgical lenses.
  • Manage complex corneal and contact lens cases such as keratoconus, irregular astigmatism, post-refractive surgery corneas, corneal scars, and post-keratoplasty eyes.
  • Undertake advanced diagnostic procedures including keratometry, corneal topography and tomography, pachymetry, dry eye assessment, and related investigations.
  • Support diagnosis, monitoring, and co-management of ophthalmic conditions in collaboration with consultant ophthalmologists.
  • Recognise clinical red flags and appropriately escalate urgent or complex findings in line with clinical governance standards.
  • Provide pre-operative and post-operative optometric support for corneal, refractive, and cataract patients as required.
  • Deliver clear patient counselling on diagnosis, treatment options, contact lens use, risks, compliance, and follow-up requirements.
  • Maintain accurate clinical documentation, uphold infection control and patient safety standards, and contribute to service development, audit, training, and continuous professional development.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Optometry or equivalent from a recognised institution.
  • Valid professional license/registration to practice as an Optometrist (or eligibility to obtain).
  • Minimum 5-7 years of post-qualification clinical experience in optometry, preferably in a hospital or specialist ophthalmology setting.
  • At least 3 years’ hands-on experience in specialty contact lens practice, including complex corneal cases.
