Job Description

This position is responsible for drawing blood from both inpatients and outpatients at CCAD and performing other pediatric, geriatric and adult specimen procurement duties. Will also participate in Royal and VVIP home visits as required.

PRIMARY JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

CLINICAL

  • Performs duties as assigned or requested by the Laboratory Director / Manager or designate
  • Refers any clinical interpretations to the respective Clinical Laboratory Consultants.
  • Performs phlebotomy on patients in accordance with established procedures
  • Deals with sorting and booking of specimens
  • Performs blood collection function at assigned area
  • Performs collection of other specimen samples as required.
  • Verifies order requests and all identifying information prior to drawing blood
  • Completes and maintains preventative maintenance and troubleshooting records
  • Maintains appropriate supplies at the workstation
  • Coordinate with the royal protocol office in regards to collecting samples from royal patients within and outside of the hospital for home visits.
  • Draw blood from veins by vacuum tube, butterfly or syringe venipuncture methods.

KNOWLEDGE OF LABORATORY ENVIRONMENT

  • Maintains established departmental policies and procedures, objectives, quality assurance programs, accreditation requirements, safety, environmental and infection control standards.
  • Ensures correct patient identification performed meets the quality control guidelines as specified in the laboratory method manual.
  • Follows departmental venipuncture control procedures by maintaining appropriate log sheets
  • Performs POCT quality control and calibration verification procedures
  • Performs limited Point of Care testing as required and after competency training finalized.
  • Initiates requests for instrument repair or service through vendors and other appropriate means
  • Performs and documents quality assurance activities related to test performance
  • Monitors and ensures the completion of laboratory records

COMMUNICATION/ RELATIONSHIP BUILDING

  • Communicates test results, reference ranges, specimen requirements and other pertinent information to appropriate sources
  • Explain urine, stool and other body fluid collection procedures to patients.
  • Participates in staff training

  • Able to Coordinate with health care professionals within and outside of CCAD

  • Determines the validity of test results through monitoring and/or verifying quality controls and standards

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT

Typical physical demands include: a high degree of manual dexterity to sufficiently perform computer functions on a keyboard, produce materials on a PC and operate basic office equipment, normal or corrected vision and hearing, extensive sitting, standing and/or walking, mobility sufficient to visit with departments or employees throughout CCAD and lift up to 12 Kg.

QUALIFICATION & EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

ESSENTIAL

Education

  • Current national Phlebotomy license is required
  • Certificate of training in an approved Phlebotomy program is required

Experience

  • Minimum of two (2) year experience in phlebotomy is required
  • Minimum one (1) year phlebotomy experience in a hospital laboratory is required
  • Excellent customer service and organizational skills is required
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision is required
  • Knowledge of basic biology, chemistry and mathematics is preferred
  • Demonstrated working knowledge of how to properly document critical values, clinician read back and quality control runs is preferred

Certification and Licensure

  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certificate is required
  • Qualification in Medical Laboratory Technology / Nursing is preferred
  • Maintains and updates personal CMEs

  • Understands and is proficient in general laboratory computer system functions
  • Strong oral and written communication skills is required
  • Ability to speak and write fluently in English is required
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office suite
  • Ability to speak and write in both English and Arabic is preferred
