Danat Al Emarat is a world-class specialty women’s and children’s hospital in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi. It offers advanced medical services across specialties including Neonatology, Pediatrics, Obstetrics & Gynecology, and Women’s Health. The hospital is one of the very few to encompass a dedicated Fetal Medicine Department along with a full-fledged Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) in the UAE. This has established Danat Al Emarat as a regional referral center for women with high-risk pregnancies, supported by its Level III NICU providing care for the most fragile newborns.

A Phlebotomist is a healthcare professional responsible for collecting blood samples from patients for laboratory testing, transfusions, research, or blood donation purposes. They play a vital role in the diagnostic process by ensuring accurate specimen collection, proper labelling, safe handling, and timely transportation of samples. Phlebotomists work closely with patients of all ages, providing compassionate care while maintaining strict infection control and patient safety standards. Their attention to detail, technical expertise, and interpersonal skills contribute significantly to accurate diagnosis and quality patient care.

Responsibilities

  • Collect blood samples from patients through venipuncture, capillary, and finger-prick procedures.
  • Verify patient identity and confirm test requests before specimen collection.
  • Prepare patients for blood collection procedures and explain the process to reduce anxiety.
  • Ensure proper labeling, handling, and transportation of specimens to the laboratory.
  • Maintain strict infection prevention and control practices, including the use of personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Follow safety protocols for the handling and disposal of sharps and biohazardous materials.
  • Monitor patients during and after blood collection for any adverse reactions, such as dizziness or fainting.
  • Maintain accurate records of specimen collection and patient information.
  • Ensure all equipment and collection supplies are properly stocked, maintained, and sterilized as required.
  • Comply with healthcare facility policies, quality standards, and regulatory requirements.
  • Collaborate with laboratory staff, nurses, physicians, and other healthcare professionals to ensure timely and accurate diagnostic testing.
  • Assist with specimen processing, packaging, and preparation for transport when required.
  • Provide compassionate, professional, and patient-centered care at all times.
  • Participate in quality improvement initiatives and ongoing professional development activities.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Medical Laboratory Technology, Medical Laboratory Science
  • DOH/DHA/MOH license
