Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Review patient’s drug regimen on a concurrent basis and verify the physician’s original order for appropriateness prior to dispensing.
  • Communicate any suggested changes to the prescribing physician.
  • Prepare, check and dispense outpatient prescriptions issued by physicians.
  • Prepare, package, dispense and deliver unit dose medication in accordance with standard procedures and techniques for hospitalized patients.
  • Provide patient education, counselling regarding drug therapy, the effects, dosage, route of administration of the drug treatments, drug related interactions, particularly for those patients who require complex drug therapy;
  • Prepare drug formulations, strength, dosage forms, and packages that are useful in the care of patient and not available commercially but approved by the Pharmacy and Therapeutics committee.
  • Prepare and quality-check all sterile medications under special conditions (e.g. intravenous medications, eye drops, etc.).
  • Monitor every stage of medication therapy to improve all aspects of delivery and reporting of patient side effects and/or medication errors.
  • Order pharmaceutical supplies, and drugs, maintaining stock and storing and handling it properly.
  • Maintain and control of the floor stocks of drugs kept in the wards and nursing units.
  • Perform routine inspection of all drug storage area within the hospital in order to ensure that no outdated or unusable drugs are present.
  • Respond to medication-related queries from healthcare professionals within the hospital.
  • Participate in evaluating new medications and recommend new medicines that are the safest and most effective for individual patient needs.
  • Keep records such as pharmacy files, patient profiles, charge system files, inventories, inspection reports, etc.

Education and license:

  • Bachelor Degree in Pharmaceutical Sciences.

Knowledge and Skills:

  • Good command of written and spoken English.
  • Frequent computer user.
  • Good communication skills for dealing with patients and healthcare professionals.
  • Able to work carefully, methodically and accurately with medicines and doses.
  • Able to use scientific knowledge to solve problems.
