Charge Nurse -Medical (STMC)
JOB DESCRIPTION
- Provides professional leadership and supervises nursing staff throughout the shift.
- Acts as a role model, mentor, and resource for clinical and administrative guidance.
- Ensures safe staffing levels and appropriate patient‑to‑nurse ratios based on acuity.
- Supports staff in clinical decision‑making, conflict resolution, and prioritization of workload.
- Provides constructive feedback, coaching, and performance support to the team.
- Leads the unit in the absence of the Nurse Manager, ensuring continuity of operations.
- Practices within regulatory scope and adheres to DOH and organizational policies.
- Supports competency development and education for junior staff and new hires.
- Maintains mandatory and medical‑unit–specific competencies.
- Participates in clinical audits, research, and evidence‑based initiatives.
- Demonstrates ongoing development in leadership and medical-unit management.
Responsibilities
- Oversees patient assessments, care planning, implementation, and evaluation on a medical unit.
- Ensures accurate and timely documentation in compliance with organizational policies.
- Supports evidence‑based practice in the management of chronic and acute medical conditions.
- Monitors patient progress and identifies changes in condition promptly, ensuring escalation when needed.
- Ensures proper medication administration, monitoring of high‑alert drugs, and compliance with regulatory requirements.
- Coordinates patient admissions, discharges, transfers, and overall flow within the medical ward.
- Supports safe management of patients with complex medical needs, including comorbidities, chronic illness, and long‑term treatments.
- Ensures readiness of equipment and resources required for medical care delivery.
Qualifications
- Bachelor Degree in Nursing; or
- Associate degree in Nursing from Canada or USA with minimum two (2) years course duration and Successful completion of the National exam: ✓ USA: NCLEX – RN ✓ Canada: Licensing Exam
