Key Responsibilities Antenatal Care
- Conduct comprehensive antenatal assessments and risk screenings.
- Obtain detailed obstetric, medical, surgical, family, and social histories.
- Monitor maternal and fetal wellbeing throughout pregnancy.
- Assess fetal growth, fetal heart rate, fetal movements, and maternal health status.
- Recognize, document, and report high-risk pregnancy indicators.
- Provide antenatal counseling and health education.
- Educate women regarding:
- Nutrition during pregnancy.
- Birth planning.
- Pain management options.
- Breastfeeding preparation.
- Newborn care.
- Family planning.
- Pregnancy warning signs.
- Support emotional wellbeing and psychosocial needs of expectant mothers.
- Facilitate referrals to physicians and specialists when required.
Intrapartum Care (Labor & Delivery)
- Assess women during labor using established clinical guidelines.
- Monitor maternal vital signs and labor progression.
- Perform fetal surveillance and fetal heart rate monitoring.
- Conduct vaginal examinations within scope of practice.
- Interpret labor findings and identify deviations from normal progress.
- Provide continuous labor support and advocacy.
- Promote physiological and woman-centered childbirth practices.
- Assist mothers with labor positioning, mobility, and comfort measures.
- Support pharmacological and non-pharmacological pain management strategies.
- Prepare laboring women for delivery procedures.
- Conduct normal vaginal deliveries where permitted by regulatory and organizational policies.
- Assist obstetricians during instrumental or operative deliveries.
- Anticipate and respond appropriately to obstetric emergencies.
- Maintain accurate labor and delivery documentation.
Postnatal Care
- Perform comprehensive maternal assessments following delivery.
- Monitor recovery during the immediate postpartum period.
- Assess uterine involution, lochia, pain management, and overall maternal wellbeing.
- Identify postpartum complications including:
- Postpartum hemorrhage.
- Infection.
- Thromboembolic events.
- Mental health concerns.
- Support maternal physical and emotional adjustment following childbirth.
- Provide discharge education and follow-up instructions.
- Promote early mobilization and recovery.
Newborn Care
- Perform immediate newborn assessment and stabilization.
- Monitor neonatal adaptation during the transition period.
- Assess newborn vital signs and physical condition.
- Support skin-to-skin contact between mother and infant.
- Promote early initiation of breastfeeding.
- Recognize neonatal complications requiring escalation.
- Assist with newborn examinations and screening procedures.
- Administer prescribed medications and immunizations.
- Educate parents regarding:
- Newborn feeding.
- Hygiene and cord care.
- Safe sleeping practices.
- Growth and developmental milestones.
- Immunization schedules.
Breastfeeding Support
- Encourage and promote exclusive breastfeeding.
- Assess breastfeeding effectiveness and challenges.
- Assist mothers with proper positioning and attachment techniques.
- Support mothers experiencing breastfeeding difficulties.
- Educate families regarding breast milk expression and storage.
- Provide evidence-based lactation support and counseling.
Emergency and High-Risk Obstetric Care
- Identify signs of maternal and fetal deterioration.
- Initiate emergency interventions within scope of practice.
- Participate in the management of:
- Postpartum hemorrhage.
- Eclampsia and pre-eclampsia.
- Shoulder dystocia.
- Cord prolapse.
- Fetal distress.
- Neonatal resuscitation.
- Escalate concerns promptly to physicians and senior clinical staff.
- Participate in emergency drills and mock code training.
Patient Education and Family Support
- Provide individualized education to mothers and families.
- Support informed decision-making regarding maternity care.
- Promote healthy pregnancy and parenting practices.
- Offer emotional support during pregnancy, labor, and postpartum recovery.
- Respect cultural, religious, and personal preferences.
- Advocate for patient rights and dignity.
Education
- Bachelor of Science in Midwifery OR
- Diploma in Midwifery with additional recognized nursing qualification.
- Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing with recognized Midwifery Certification where applicable.
Licensure
- Valid DHA / DOH / MOHAP Midwife License or Eligibility.
- Active professional registration as a Midwife.
- Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification.
- Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) Certification preferred.
- Advanced Life Support in Obstetrics (ALSO) preferred.
