Registered Midwife (Female ONLY)

Job Description

Midwives are recognized as a responsible and accountable professional who works in partnership with women to give the necessary support, care and advice during pregnancy, labour and the postpartum period, to conduct births is the midwife’s own responsibility with the scope of practice, and to provide care for the newborn. This care includes preventative measures, the promotion of normal birth, the detection of complications in mother and child, the accessing of medical care or other appropriate assistance and the carrying out of emergency measures (ICM, 2018). Competency to practice necessitates ongoing reflection and evaluation of own performance, with this process being facilitated by considering the practice standards specified in the following document.
Job Functions and Key Accountability’s:
Professional responsibility:
> Accepts responsibility and accountability for all actions and decision making within scope of practice as defined by DOH
> Adheres to the Code of Conduct for DOH Abu Dhabi, and the organization
> Completes mandatory and unit specific competencies and demonstrates ongoing compliance with appropriate evidence.
> Develops and maintains own professional portfolio.
> Takes responsibility for own professional development and actively engages in ongoing self-directed learning.
> Obtains accredited and non-accredited Continuing Nursing Education (CNE) Units in compliance with DOH requirements.
> Complete mandatory annual staff training requirements.
> Participates in self and peer evaluation including reflective practice
> Maintain any qualifications, including license and certificates such as Basic Life Support and other mandatory training within established timeframes.
> Complying consistently with all organization policies, procedures and practices relevant to position.
> Demonstrates leadership in the professional practice setting and the profession.
Midwifery practice and comprehensive care:
> Acts as the lead care provider for women with uncomplicated pregnancy.
> In accordance with organization policy, provides routine antenatal, intrapartum and postnatal care for normal pregnancy including risk assessment, recognition of complications and initiation of appropriate action including escalation to the appropriate physician.
> Responsible for the assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of patient care in accordance with the organization’s policy and procedures and the unit scope of service.
> Promotes breastfeeding and complies with ‘baby friendly’ organizational initiatives.
> Ensures documentation is contemporaneous, accurate and maintains confidentiality of information at all times.
> Uses the individualized, integrated plan of care to guide and prioritize care throughout the episode incorporating discharge planning and setting measurable goals daily which are transparent to the patient.
> Assumes accountability and responsibility for own practice and does not carry out tasks beyond level of competence.
> Utilizes and integrates evidence based practice and research findings into practice.
> Identifies significant changes in patient condition, initiates appropriate action and reports to immediate supervisor or physician as appropriate.
> Utilizes early warning scoring tools to identify deterioration in a timely fashion and escalates care appropriately as per organization policy.
> Responds to all levels of emergencies according to the organization’s policies and procedures
> Prioritizes patient care based on ongoing assessment of patient needs
> Demonstrates service excellence and acts as a patient advocate to support the patient’s rights and dignity at all times.
> Facilitates a climate of mutual understanding, and appreciation of cross cultural differences inherent in a multicultural society.
> Demonstrates knowledge and compliance with the seven rights of medication administration, high risk medication and narcotics policy and the medication reconciliation process.
> Is accountable and responsible to practice within the Ministry of Health and DOH-AD Narcotic Policies and Procedures.
> Demonstrates knowledge of and compliance with the reporting of medication errors including near misses or adverse drug reactions on Incident Reporting System.
Communication and collaboration:
> Facilitates effective communication between the patient, family and the interdisciplinary healthcare team, as required.
> Practices midwifery in a negotiated partnership with the woman, where and when possible.
> Communicates effectively with woman and members of the health care team.
> Communicates effectively in a variety of formats in all areas of practice.
> Collaborates with the patient, family, and others in the conduct of midwifery practice.
> Collaborates and participates with colleagues and members of the healthcare team to facilitate and coordinate care.
> Recognizes and values the roles and skills of all members of the healthcare team in the delivery of care.
> Establishes and maintains professional boundaries with patients and members of the healthcare team.
> Upholds the organizations customer service standards at all times.
> Make a personal contribution towards effective and efficient working relationships within your team, and with other departments.
Quality improvement and risk management:
> Participates in quality improvement activities to monitor and improve standards of midwifery.
> To participate in improvement initiatives within the organization.
> Monitors and assists in evaluating unit operation and services in order to correct problems, improve systems and ensure safe patient care.
> Ensures provision of a clean and safe working environment that minimizes risks to patients and family
> Actively contributes to the organizations’ culture of patient safety.
> To participate in change management programs within the organization.
> To participate in clinical governance, quality and audit programs.

Qualification

Bachelor’s Degree in Midwifery
OR
Diploma of min 3 years in Nursing and Diploma of min 1 year in Midwifery
Experience: min 2 years recent experience as Midwife in a hospital setting
License: DOH licensed / DOH Exam Passer / Exam Exempted (DHA/MOH license will be considered).
Arab nationals preferred
