Job Description
The Registered Midwife is responsible in Assessment, Management and Provision of Quality Nursing Care to all patients. An active member of the multidisciplinary team and collaborates in the development, execution, and evaluation of the multidisciplinary plan of care or critical pathway. The registered Midwife provides care and support for women before, during and after delivery of the baby, as well as providing care for the newborn. They are responsible for making sure that the medical as well as the emotional needs of the patient are adequately met throughout the entire birthing process as well as the postpartum period. Assist new mothers with physical and emotional needs during the postpartum period, while in the hospital setting. They perform the dual role of caring for the infants and educating mothers about care. Must be able to conduct deliveries when indicated.
Responsibilities:
- Provides nursing care of women and their babies in a safe, effective, timely and acceptable manner.
- Expert knowledge of midwifery and normal birth agenda.
- Administers interventions, treatments, and medications in accordance with legislation, FUH policies, and professional standards of practice.
- Demonstrates a commitment to and understanding of continuity of care.
- Provides nursing care as directed by each woman and in accordance with the woman’s written Care Plan and woman’s needs.
- Proactively protects, promotes, and supports breastfeeding, in accordance with accreditation guidelines.
- Ensures the woman is provided with appropriate information to make informed decisions relating to care, and that care reflects client’s preferences.
- Demonstrates culturally safe practice and respects the woman’s ethnic, social, and religious background.
- Adapts education to meet the specific needs of the woman/family.
- Ensures documentation is current, accurate, timely and maintains confidentiality within a legal and ethical framework.
- Maintain high standards of Midwifery and Neonatal Nursing care within a safe environment.
Performance measures:
- To observe the clinical policies, procedures, and standards within the department/hospital.
- Monitors patient throughout the antepartum, intrapartum (vaginal delivery as well as Cesarean Section), and postpartum period.
- Performs basic IV and central line skills, phlebotomy skills.
- Knowledge of hemodynamics.
- Administers medication as prescribed.
- Demonstrates competency when recording patient’s (mother and newborn) vital signs, and identifies abnormalities and intervenes if needed.
- Monitor fetal heart and contractions, identifies abnormalities, and intervenes if needed.
- Ensures patient’s bed is kept dry & clean; cleans up bodily fluids expelled before & after the birthing process.
- Contacts anesthesia when/if patient is ready for epidural; contacts delivering physician at appropriate time, ascertains proper time.
- Demonstrates competency in assessment of progress of labour (vaginal examinations), as well as performing AROM.
- Cares for and supports patients during natural labour, waterbirth, labour augmentation, MgSO4 & continuous lumbar epidural.
- Encourages and educates patient during second stage.
- Able to conduct deliveries if needed.
- Initial steps of NRP as well as skin-to-skin, initiating breastfeeding within the first hour.
- Assists in preparing patient for Cesarean Section.
- Demonstrates competency in scrub, circulating and recovering during Cesarean Section.
- Emergency situations are responded to effectively and in a timely manner.
- Maintains a comfortable, safe, and clean environment for mother and infant.
- Assists mother with her hygienic needs.
- Demonstrate competency in postpartum assessment, identifies abnormalities and intervenes if needed.
- Performs emotional status checks on mother, recognizing symptoms such as those related to post-partum depression.
- Monitors bonding between mother and infant.
- Assists and educates parents with infant feeding (breastfeeding and formula) and newborn care (diapering, bathing, cord care, feeding).
- Demonstrates competency in newborn blood extraction via heel prick, identifies abnormalities and intervenes if needed.
- Demonstration competency in vaccinations of newborn, and newborn screening (hearing, metabolic, glucose, CCHD).
- Records all care information concisely, accurately, and completely, in a timely manner, in the appropriate format and on the appropriate forms.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor of Bachelor of midwifery
- BLS/ACLS Provider is a plus
- DHA License
- Minimum of 2 years of experience in a recognized/accredited hospital
- Prenatal care, Antenatal Care, and Postnatal Care.
