Summary
Performs a variety of cytogenetic/chromosomal analysis in the Clinical Laboratory to obtain accurate data for diagnosis and treatment of disease.
Essential Responsibilities and Duties
1. Prepares microscopic slides from specimens of scrapings, or other exudates, and fixes them. Stains and mount slides to preserve specimen and enhance visibility of cells under the microscope.
2. Examines the chromosomes present in blood, amniotic fluid, and bone marrow using slide preparations and tissue cultures.
3. Uses karyotyping and fluorescent-labelled DNA (FISH technique) to detect gene and chromosome abnormalities.
4. Analyses chromosomes for prenatal diagnosis, congenital birth defects, fertility problems and hematological disorders.
5. Counts numbers of chromosomes and identify the structural abnormalities by viewing culture slides through microscopes, light microscopes, or photomicroscopes or imaging system.
6. Assists in ordering supplies and maintains the supply inventory system. Operates within cost effective practices of section.
Education
Bachelor’s Degree in Medical Technology is required.
Experience Required
Grade 08:
Two (2) years of experience in Cytogenetics with Bachelor’s or completion of one (1) year SCDP program in Cytogenetics at KFSH&RC for Saudi National is required.
Grade 09:
Four (4) years as Cytogenetics Technologist at KFSH&RC, or (Grade 08) related experience is required. Average of annual performance appraisal at least (3.5) for the last four (4) years. Fifty (50) hours of cumulative continued medical education [CME].
Other Requirements(Certificates)
Current Registration from country of origin and Saudi Commission for Health Specialties(SCHS) is required.
Registration as CLSP (Cytogenetics), Technologist(Cytogenetics), AIMLS, AIMS, NZIMLT, Cytogenetics Technologist, or equivalent license in country of origin is Preferred.
