Specialist Pediatric Pulmonologist

Job Description

  • Evaluate and manage pediatric patients with acute and chronic respiratory conditions (e.g., recurrent wheeze/asthma, pneumonia, bronchiolitis, chronic lung disease of prematurity, bronchiectasis, cystic fibrosis, interstitial lung disease, sleep-disordered breathing, and rare pulmonary disorders).
  • Provide inpatient consults, PICU/NICU support (as applicable), and emergency department consultations for respiratory cases.
  • Perform and interpret pediatric bronchoscopies (flexible/rigid as credentialed).
  • Interpret pulmonary function tests (spirometry, lung volumes, diffusion studies), exhaled nitric oxide, allergy/prick testing coordination, and sleep study interpretations in collaboration with Respiratory Therapy and Sleep Medicine teams.
  • Develop individualized management plans, including biologics for severe asthma, airway clearance regimens, home oxygen, and non-invasive ventilation where indicated.
  • Lead/participate in pediatric respiratory clinics (asthma clinic, difficult-to-control asthma, CF/bronchiectasis, chronic cough, home ventilation).

Quality & Safety

  • Practice according to SEHA Clinical Practice Guidelines (CPGs), pathways, and DOH standards.
  • Ensure accurate documentation in the EMR, coding compliance, and timely completion of medical records.
  • Participate in incident reporting, morbidity & mortality meetings, and clinical audits; drive continuous quality improvement (CQI).
  • Adhere to infection prevention and control standards, medication safety, and sedation/bronchoscopy safety protocols.

Education & Collaboration

  • Provide education and counseling to patients and families on disease management, inhaler techniques, allergy/trigger avoidance, and adherence.
  • Engage in multidisciplinary care with Pediatrics, PICU/NICU, Allergy/Immunology, ENT, Cardiology, Nutrition, Respiratory Therapy, Physiotherapy, Nursing, and Social Work.
  • Contribute to staff education, CME activities, and clinical teaching of residents/interns (if applicable).

Service Development & Research

  • Support the development of pediatric respiratory services in Al Dhafra, including clinic pathways, referral networks, and outreach where needed.
  • Participate in clinical research, registries (e.g., CF/bronchiectasis), and quality projects; present outcomes in internal forums.

Qualifications

  • Medical Degree (MBBS/MD or equivalent) from a recognized institution.
  • Residency in Pediatrics plus fellowship/subspecialty training in Pediatric Pulmonology (minimum 2 years) from an accredited program.
  • Board Certification (e.g., Arab Board/European Board/US/UK/Canadian/Australasian or equivalent) in Pediatrics; subspecialty certification in Pediatric Pulmonology preferred.
  • Valid DOH (Abu Dhabi) license or eligibility as Specialist Physician – Pediatrics/Pediatric Pulmonology (HAAD legacy accepted as DOH).
  • Life Support Certifications: BLS and PALS (ACLS if involved in sedation/advanced procedures).
  • Experience: Minimum 3–5 years post-fellowship experience in pediatric pulmonology, including bronchoscopy and complex asthma care (SEHA/tertiary experience preferred).
  • Languages: Proficiency in English; Arabic is an advantage.
