Job Description

The Incumbent is a Specialist General Surgeon who provides services to patients in OPD, attends emergencies, operates on those that need surgery, and also manages the pre and post- operative care of patients under him. The types of cases he handles will be strictly as per the hospital privileging. Provides preventive care of patients according to approved procedures as part of the integrated program and to meet JCI standards. He/she is responsible for attending ambulatory and hospitalized surgical patients including cases of all degrees of complexity, which are within the area of competence and expertise; additionally providing surgical care of a more specialized nature within the clinical privileges, approved by the Credentials and Privileges Committee. The Chief is informed of unusual problems or actions taken regarding unusual cases. Provide consultations at the request of other staff of other services in the hospital.

Responsibilities

  1. Performs all management functions and duties of a general surgeon and provides expert medical care for ambulatory and hospitalized patients, including pre- and post-operative cases and such surgical procedures as are within incumbent’s competence.
    1. Performs professional duties in the OPD at which out-patients surgical care is to be rendered to patients as needed.
    2. Provides consultation services to physicians and other surgeons and other specialists if and when required.
    3. Assumes after-hours responsibilities for the care of assigned surgical cases and makes daily rounds for those hospitalized.
    4. Orders diagnostic laboratory studies and X-ray examinations, determining the diagnosis and prescribing applicable therapy.
    5. Determines the eligibility of patients for admission.
    6. Adheres to the By-laws and Rules and Regulations of the Medical Department and assures that work performed is in keeping with the established standards of the Joint Commission of Accreditation of Hospitals.
    7. Consults with anesthesiologist on the choice of anesthesia to be used.
    8. Participates in and contributes to in-service activities such as lectures, conferences and rounds.
    9. Participates in the Quality Assurance activities of the Service (morbidity and mortality reviews peer review activities etc.).
    10. Participates in hospital committee functions as assigned.

Performs other duties as assigned by the head of the department.

Qualifications

  1. Graduation from an approved medical school plus one year of internship and three years of residency; certification by the American Board of Surgical medicine or Member of the Royal College of Surgeons (or its equivalent).
    1. At least three (3) years of experience in general surgery.
    2. Excellent command of oral and written English. Knowledge of Arabic language is desirable but not essential.
    3. Must be highly skilled in the particular field of practice, with mature clinical judgment and ability to provide professional leadership. He / she must have a thorough knowledge of Surgical Department policies and procedures with particular reference to the obligation to maintain the confidentiality of his work; personality which inspires confidence and trust in his patients; and adhere to Bylaws, Rules and Regulations of the Medical Organization.
    4. Current licensure in country of origin and with DHA license to practice general surgery in Dubai, UAE.
    5. Communication, interpersonal skills as applied to interaction with co-workers, superiors, patients & families.
