JOB PURPOSE:

Responsible for reviewing all clinical information of patient episodes to ensure accurate codes and abstracts of Fakeeh Healthcare services. The Coding Officer will utilize appropriate coding guidelines to assign ICD and ACHI codes and ensure accurate DRG assignment. The Coding Officer will also communicate workflow, backlog, and turn-around-time issues for records.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:

  • Utilizes standard medical coding systems (such as ICD-10, ACHI, SNOMED CT, and others) to assign and record accurate codes for all diagnoses, services, procedures, and operations as documented by the attending physician in the patient’s medical record for inpatient and outpatient settings.
  • Interacts with physicians and other medical staff to clarify or secure additional information necessary for accurate coding of patient records. 
  • Ensures that all coded information is promptly and correctly entered into the disease, service, and procedure database, and ensures that the final diagnostic code numbers and narrative descriptions of diagnoses and procedures are entered accurately. 
  • Verifies that all factors required for accurate DRG assignment are present and that all diagnoses are ranked properly. 
  • Acts as a resource for other departments on coding-related matters, providing support and clarification as needed. 
  • Prepares or assists in preparing statistical reports or other specialized reports related to patients, diseases, treatments, and procedures.

  • Stays updated on coding-related issues, including new coding guidelines, new codes, coding systems, and evolving medical procedures, to ensure accurate coding practices. 
  • Assists in the training of students, coder trainees, and other staff members as needed. 
  • Performs compatible mapping with standards and classifications acceptable by Fakeeh Care (e.g., GTIN, CCHI Billing System, ICD-10, etc.). 
  • Collaborates with the billing department to ensure all bills are satisfied in a timely manner, ensuring accurate coding on billing forms. 
  • Communicates with insurance companies regarding coding errors, discrepancies, and disputes to facilitate resolution and prompt reimbursement.
  • Other duties as assigned within the scope of the job.

Experience:

2 years of experience in medical coding, preferably in a healthcare or hospital setting.
