Job Purpose:
Cleans and polishes teeth, provides preventive dental care, and educates patients on good oral hygiene practices and aftercare for dental treatments. Assists chairside with the dentist during examinations and treatments as needed.
Key Responsibilities And Duties
- Cleans teeth, provides preventive dental care and educates patients on oral hygiene: This includes the relationship between diet and oral health, and proper brushing and flossing techniques.
- Examines patients’ teeth and gums and records any diseases or abnormalities.
- Uses rotary and hand instruments, take and process X-rays, and administer topical anesthetics as applicable.
- Manages patient hygiene regimen: This includes taking, processing, and evaluating radiographs.
- Records patient vital signs, oral conditions, and treatment details: Updates computer charts with procedures and recommendations.
- Develops prevention programs for patients.
- Cleans and sterilizes instruments, prepares the hygiene room for patients and performs assisting and clerical duties during downtime.
- Provides intraoral camera tours and polish fillings and metal restorations.
- Educates patients and their families about health conditions, treatments and preventative measures if applicable.

Skills And Abilities
- Able to follow and apply established office policies and procedures.
- Capable of working effectively with doctor, staff members, and patients under varying conditions.
- Familiar with computers and internet programs.
Experience
2 – 3 years of experience
Education
Requires a minimum of two years of college education. Some dental hygiene programs are longer than two years and may culminate in a baccalaureate degree. Because the dental hygiene education program includes dental and basic science courses, high school preparation should include biology and chemistry
Language
Fluent in both written and spoken English
Licenses / Certifications
License for practice as per the regional health regulatory authority e.g. (SCFHS / DHA)
