Performs the professional duties of an ophthalmologist and ensures that ophthalmological care rendered meets Joint Commission on Accreditation of Hospital standards. Participates in the planning and development of professional standards. Monitors within established guidelines the quality of care provided and the response to consultations, initiates and participates in review/study of difficult and special cases.
Responsibilities
- Performs the professional duties of an ophthalmologist.
- Performs complete eye examination, assessment, determines and/or implements the course of treatment.
- Performs elective and emergency surgery as expected within the scope of the specialist ophthalmologist.
- Monitors the eye care rendered on a daily basis to ensure that Joint Commission on Accreditation of Hospital standards are met.
- Keeps informed as to current developments in the field of ophthalmology.
- Coordinates with the Medical Administrator in planning programs, integrating the curative and preventive aspects of total patient care.
- Participates in the implementation of approved curative/preventive programs as they relate to ophthalmology.
- Oversees and monitors and participates in QA programs as requested by the Quality Office.
- Prepares and submits to the Medical Administrator for approval the daily work schedule, weekend schedules, ER on-call schedule after working hours, personal leaves and vacation.
- Participates in the development and maintenance of professional quality standards and makes recommendations for improvement of such standards.
- Orients new ophthalmology staff when requested to do so.
- Recommends change in established policy, rules or regulations where pertinent.
- Supervises correct and efficient use of supplies and equipment provided to cut down on expenditure and eliminate waste.
- Utilizes and monitors to ensure that unit personnel use supporting services (nursing, operation support, pathology, radiology etc) in a timely, efficient and cost-effective manner.
- Assists in the development of improved methods and job simplification of existing procedures, policies and practices.
- Maintains a cordial and professional atmosphere at all times.
- Ensures that all staff in the department maintains professionalism at all times.
- Participates in group conferences requiring the viewpoint and opinions of the specialty regarding difficult medical cases.
- Attends staff meetings and weekly rounds and participates in in-service activities as required, i.e., Morbidity & Mortality conferences, Peer Reviews, etc.
- Performs other miscellaneous related duties as requested by the Head of the Department.
- Continuous Quality Improvement and patient’s safety program. Develops and promotes appropriate standards of Supports care in Ophthalmology Department.
- Develops and implements effective Peer Review. Evaluates staff and provides annual and on-going feedback as appropriate.
- To follow appropriate international guidelines, DHA regulations & Joint Commission International norms while treating or managing patients as well as while discharging their professional duties.
Qualifications
- Graduate of approved Medical School; plus internship with certification or equivalent by the American Board of Ophthalmology; active membership in an ophthalmological specialty society in the United States or United Kingdom.
- Specialized training or at least 5 years experience as a practicing ophthalmologist.
- Excellent command of oral and written English. Knowledge of Arabic language is desirable but not essential.
- Must have a thorough knowledge of medical ethics, with particular reference to the obligation to maintain the confidentiality of his work; personality which inspires confidence and trust in his patients; and adhere to Bylaws, Rules and Regulations of the Medical Organization.
- Current licensure in country of origin and with DHA license to practice in Dubai, UAE.
