Job Purpose:
Performs a variety of technical duties to assist Dentist in the examination and treatment of patients; perform related duties involved in the care and maintenance of dental instruments, equipment and supplies.
Key Responsibilities And Duties
- Assists the dentists during procedures, including seating patients, providing instruments, mixing materials, and charting examination and treatment results.
- Prepares patients for oral surgery and assists the surgeon during operative procedures by performing technical duties such as preparing surgical trays, setting up intravenous equipment, taking vital signs, removing sutures, and monitoring EKG equipment.
- Observes patients during surgical procedures, alert the surgeon to sudden changes in the patient’s condition, and administer emergency procedures as required.
- Ensures all instruments, supplies, and equipment are cleaned, sterilized, assembled and prepared for use.
- Assists in the preparation of cast models by preparing materials, taking impressions and pouring and trimming models.
- Takes, develops and processes intra and extra oral radiographs for diagnosis and treatment.
- Records treatment results on patient records, instruct patients in oral care and appliance use, and provide instructional materials as needed.
- Schedules and confirms appointments, manages patient records, handles paperwork, requisition supplies, and performs routine maintenance on instruments and equipment.
- Keeps track of patient balances and coordinates with dental reception for fee collection and inventory management.
- Maintains and prepares equipment for sterilization, performs daily maintenance on dental units, and reports defective equipment to the Chairperson of Dental.
- Follows strict infection control protocols and keep. emergency response cart stocked and ready.
- Manages and checks stock levels in the dental supply room, reporting shortages to the Chairperson of Dental.
- Performs daily maintenance for the dental unit, cleaning of filters, oiling hand pieces and flushing suction hoses.
- Reports any defective equipment to the Chairperson of Dental Department.
- Follows the rules of infection control very strictly.
- Keeps the ER cart always ready for use and performs daily check of its medicines and inspect their expiry dates and reports to the Chairperson of Dental Department for any shortages.
- Takes vital signs for each patient, ensuring accurate and timely data collection.
- Educates patients and their families about health conditions, treatments and preventative measures if applicable.

Education
Works requires the ability to assist a dentist in examining and treating patients generally acquired through a high school education and one year of experience OR completion of an approved dental assistant course.
